Kurn’s Sunday (Monday) Brain Dump 9

I’m pretty annoyed. I did this whole video about my old guild and our BC raiding and then talked about what I knew about Sunwell Plateau… and the sound completely bugged out. Every half second, the sound on my voiceover would blip out for a tiny fraction of time, but it sounds awful. I’m going to probably keep the raw footage and then try to do a voiceover. We’ll see if I have time this week. That said, the Montreal Canadiens lost to the Carolina Hurricanes last Friday night, so I suddenly have more time on my hands. ;)

Topic 1: Bored now

I am so bored with WoW right now that I’m not even logging in for crafting orders. And I love crafting things! What is keeping you playing right now?

Topic 2: Storytime with Kurn

Video coming Soon, but I’m still pissed off that my audio was all whacked out. I need to troubleshoot that and then redo a voiceover. Grr. Argh.

Topic 3: Favourite Race, Favourite Class

Tell me about your favourite race in WoW and why it’s that race.

Then tell me about your favourite class in WoW and why it’s that class.

And tell me if you have any race/class combos that you adore.

Male night elf hunter for me, for Kurn.

Female human paladin for me, for Madrana.

And then I am a sucker for male dwarves and their emotes and their casts. I have a lot of male dwarves. They may be my favourite race to play. But never for a hunter. I do not mind them as pallies, though! The Baby Paladin was a dwarf ’till like, Wrath content? I think? It’s been a while.

I’m especially interested to know if anyone really favours the newer races and classes and why!

And, as always, what do you want to hear me talk about next week, either on this blog or in Storytime with Kurn?

  1. What keeps me logging in? Well, I’ll split that into two answers for the two versions of WoW.

Classic: The Anniversary servers to be specific, but I do still login occasionally to the Era server cluster. I mainly login because I want to see my current leveling bunch of toons reach max level (L70, TBC-era), and I do enjoy the leveling and questing process. The lack of pressure to complete the process and jump into raiding is also a great feeling, because the last time I did this in TBC Classic it was all about RUSH-RUSH-RUSH (no, not the band) and then get your ass attuned so you can go raiding by XXX date. (I barely made it as I was leveling a Shaman on the Alliance side, and I had two graduations to attend prior to me starting in on the process.)

Retail: It goes without saying, but I don’t level or do anything resembling “playing the game” in Retail. I haven’t bought an expansion since Mists, and I only did it then when I had a toon leveled to the point of needing the expac. Back then, when a new expac dropped I would start over and level a new toon from scratch, so leveling a Kaldorei Rogue meant it took me about 8-9 months leveling mainly via BGs (I think) before I got her to Pandaria.

But what I do in Retail is observe. I learned very quickly that low level toons are essentially non-existent on any save for the RP servers, so I have about 3-4 low level toons on Moon Guard and whatever the main Horde RP server is (the name escapes me) and I just hang out in a capital city (or Goldshire) and watch the show. I don’t stay in some places very long, because like looking at the sun if you look too long you get burned. I learned that the surprisingly hard way because I figured I’d at least get a lowbie toon through the Elwynn quests, and of course there’s a few quests inside The Lion’s Pride Inn. So, I was in there, dumping crap out of my bags and collecting another quest, when I got a whisper inquiring what my “limitations” were for, well, you know. That took all of 2-3 minutes of game time, but it quickly convinced me to get the hell out of Dodge and not hang around there any longer than I absolutely had to.

Okay, now you asked for it. Favorite combinations?

Right now, the combinations I play the most are the combinations I like the most.

    Female Human Mage (Classic)
Female Sindorei Mage (Classic and Retail)
Male Sindorei Paladin (Retail, first toon I made to max level back in 2009-2010)
    Female Human Paladin (Classic)
Female Kaldorei Rogue (Classic and Retail)
Male Human/Worgen Warlock (Human in Classic, Worgen in Cataclsym Era Retail)
    Female Draenei Shaman (Classic)

As for the newer classes/races, I’m not a fan. Different Strokes and all that, but once you add too many races and class combos, it makes the game that much more difficult to balance. Hence, all of the class uniqueness begins to fade away because it’s all too much for the Devs to deal with. It also just pushes the boundary of the map and the game to the point where you start to wonder how the hell were all of these other lands ever missed when people were, oh, sailing out there on the oceans? How complex does the community want their game? When you’re constantly adding more, once you get past a certain point you just kind of get analysis/paralysis and then burned out from it all.

    1. So sorry for the long wait, Redbeard. It’s been A Week ™.

Sounds like you just like levelling and questing, which is awesome. Getting levelled AND geared AND attuned, etc, is a Lot, especially on a deadline. I like to think I’ve learned a lot about the state of the game at that time and so not only do I remember stupid things like where Netherwing Eggs spawn, or what-have-you, I like to think that I’d have done better at the heroics and stuff, which I HATED the first time around. Loathed, is actually the precise word. Heroic Shattered Halls without a pally tank and a mage? Good luck! But now I think I could do better as a healer or a DPS. Or even a pally tank.

So what do you do when they’re max level? PUG some Karas? Or just quietly farm or PVP or what?

hahaha, for retail, I haven’t done any dungeons (barring some Cata timewalking or the odd follower dungeon) this expansion, I don’t think. Maybe one for Kurn? Once? Can’t even remember. So I feel you there for sure. I’m just playing on vibes, as the kids might say. :D Just doing whatever I feel like. Not even remotely efficient or clever or whatever. I just do what I feel like doing when I feel like doing it.

I learned early on to avoid Moon Guard, and particularly that inn, if I didn’t want to… participate in things… So like, it’s not my thing, so I just tend to avoid that place. :) If it’s someone’s thing, more power to them! I just remember a friend of mine telling me about it like midway through Vanilla and I popped over just for funsies and was like OKAY, you were right, I should not have gone there.

Yay for human females! I really do like them. I can also see the awesome fantasy aspect for the blood elves, I’m just someone who is largely Alliance only.

What made you go Worgen for the warlock in Cata vs. Human in Classic or vice-versa?

My shammy was also a female draenei, until I could race switch to a d0rf. LOVE me those little male dwarves, man. haha. My biggest problem in playing a shaman is always that someone says “lust” or “hero” and I’m like “JFC, why are they not hitting heroi..s..m.. oh damn, that’s me. WHOOPS.”

As to the maps, I laugh so hard at all that. Couldn’t some of these continents be on the OTHER SIDE of the globe? ahahah. I guess we have to suspend disbelief now and again.

I’m not a super fan of the newer races and classes myself. I liked the original options, liked BC options, did not love the introduction of Death Knights or Monks, but what’re ya gonna do. Can’t please everyone all of the time. I guess ultimately, I don’t mind them adding some combos as long as they don’t take away any, and I can’t imagine they’d be THAT stupid to do that.

… I mean, they’re dumb, but they’re not that dumb. Are they? ahahaha.

  2. Heroic Shattered Halls without a pally tank and a mage? Good luck!

Having done that as an Enhancement Shaman, I learned very quickly that if a Mage freezes a mob in place in Shattered Halls, you’re gonna get killed as melee unless you step back really fast. All those mobs will turn and smack you if they can’t get to the tank, and a poor melee DPS that’s not wearing plate will evaporate.

As for Worgen for Warlock, I wanted to level a Warlock via Battlegrounds, and since I hadn’t created a Worgen at the time I figured I might as well. I got that Warlock up into the Wrath levels before finally throwing in the towel and giving up on that toon, because Warlocks in Cataclysm had been really nerfed to oblivion in BGs, unlike how overpowered they were in Wrath. However, I created a Human Warlock during OG Vanilla Classic because the Worgen didn’t exist at the time, but I simply couldn’t get into it; I think it took me 2-3 times before I finally got a Human Warlock to stick, and I took her to L60 on the Anniversary servers.

Shamans are in demand for two reasons: buffs and totems. You pop Hero, you keep up Windfury (or totem twist so you get both Windfury and Grace of Air), and people are happy. You do Mana Tide as Resto and the casters are happy. But God forbid you miss your attack rotation because you have to keep totems balanced and people lose their minds.

    1. Oh dear god, I could never be a melee class in H Shattered Halls. Ever. My brother was playing his rogue and the number of times he died EVERY RUN was just outright hilarious.

You know, I have never gotten into warlocks as a class. I have one. He levels via mining. I just don’t… do anything with him beyond mining and engineering. I think being a hunter spoiled me for better control over the pets, tbh. Huge props to you for getting up into Wrath and then your human ‘lock. That’s way more stick-to-it-ness than I ever gave it! And it’s not like I don’t know they can be amazing! I do! I just… it’s not for me.

Shammies have it rough no matter what. hahaha. I do miss dropping appropriate totems, but I do not miss how mana spring and blessing of wisdom conflict or whatever the AP one is (???) and blessing of might. Hero, windfury, mana tide, all wonderous things, though. :) I do love my d0rf shammy so very much. It’s so weird to think of how the class has changed so much since Vanilla.
